Already from a distance, the volcanic cone of the Auerberg can be distinguished from other mountains in the Lower Harz, as the “Josephskreuz” towers over the trees on its summit. From the parking lot of the schindelbruch nature resort, it is only a short ascent up to the 579 m high mountain.
The 38 m high observation tower, the largest double cross in the world, is named after its builder, the art-minded Count JOSEPH ZU STOLBERG-STOLBERG (1771-1839). As an architect, he was able to commit KARL FRIEDRICH SCHINKEL (1781-1841). The Josephskreuz, which was completely renovated after 1990, was awarded the Nature Park Prize in 2006 as the most beautiful observation tower in the entire Harz.
You can reach the Großer Auerberg on foot either from Stolberg (approx. 4 km) or from the parking lot of the “Wellness-Hotel Schindelbruch” (approx. 1 km), an ideal house for excursions into the entire South Harz region.
