Prehistoric sea and tropical swamp

450 million years of geological history have left their mark between the Harz Mountains and the heath: Marine coverings alternated with deserts, tropical swamps and glaciers. Ore, salt, coal and oil have emerged as valuable mineral resources. Significant fossil finds bear witness to the varied and exciting history of our region.

What is a geopark?

A geopark is an area of supra-regional geological significance with rocks, quarries and other geotopes of particular rarity and beauty. It also contains significant archaeological, historical and cultural objects that are closely linked to the natural resources.

...under one roof

A geopark serves sustainable regional development. Under its umbrella, existing institutions are networked and joint activities in geotope protection, leisure & tourism, environmental education and scientific research are developed.
