Directly on the B 244, between Wernigerode and Elbingerode, you have the opportunity to experience historical Harz iron ore mining in a new way. Just 300 metres from the large car park, you can reach the reception building with exhibition room, passing many mining tools from days gone by.

In about 75 minutes, the conditions under which the Harz miners extracted the valuable ores until 1970 are shown in a professional and entertaining way. Via an easily navigable staircase, past the mighty supporting structures of what was once the longest cable car in Europe, you reach the drive system of the cable car, which is demonstrated by the guides, as are the other mining machines located underground. Passing the ore bunker and the filling stations of the cable car wagons, you enter the area of the winding shaft.

This is a unique geological outcrop in Europe that reveals different types of rock in a very small space. A sight that appeals not only to visitors interested in geology. In the mine you can experience other mining technology in full operation. Overhead loaders, hammer drills and ore scrapers are impressive in size and weight as well as in the noise level, which every visitor can experience for themselves.

The machines are true to the original from the Büchenberg. Miners' extensions in underground areas are necessary for various reasons. In a northerly direction, you pass through a goblet mine before returning to the cable car cellar, where you can reach daylight again via the convenient staircase.
