Like so many places in the Harz Mountains, Bad Lauterberg has a long mining tradition. One relic of this bygone era is the Scholmzeche/Aufrichtigkeit visitor gallery, which has been converted into a museum mine. This gallery from the beginning of the 18th century is a historical mining attraction. It is an ironstone exploration gallery, i.e. a test gallery driven horizontally into the mountain to find iron ore. The special thing about this tunnel is the fact that it was driven by hand, i.e. with "mallet and iron", up to 4 metres high and 1.5 metres wide.
In 1989, this old gallery was converted into a museum mine and opened to visitors, providing an insight into the local mining history. A mining rarity was discovered during the clearing of the old gallery, which was used again for air-raid defence purposes during the Second World War. A wooden "Gerenne", i.e. a wooden construction that was a floor, working platform and water supply in one. A wooden headframe was also installed from another tunnel near the mouth (tunnel entrance), which is located in the immediate vicinity of the spa gardens on the eastern bank of the Oder.
The tour is around 250 metres long and starts at the Wilhelmi Bridge. Various mining workplaces are arranged in the tunnel and several types of roadway give an insight into mining work at the beginning of the 19th century. In addition, the various local ores and rocks as well as numerous historical work utensils are vividly presented.
For visitors interested in geology, there are numerous vein outcrops to see. Finally, there is a water-powered functional model of an art bike with push rod and swinging art on a scale of 1:6 to marvel at.
