The medieval half-timbered and hop-growing town of Hornburg with its 400 listed half-timbered houses is located in the municipality of Schladen-Werla in the northern Harz foreland in the Ilse valley. The Protestant St Mary's Church, built in 1616, the local history museum with its facsimile of the Gospels of Henry the Lion and the Pope Clement II memorial room are embedded in over 1000 years of town history. As a hop town, former border town and state-recognised resort, Hornburg invites you to discover and explore beautiful old half-timbered houses, old stories and the wisdom that these houses still reflect today. Hornburg is situated on a foothill of the Kleiner Fallstein.
The Geopark information centre is located together with the Hornburg Tourist Information Office in the town hall. It also houses the office of the Schladen-Werla community information centre. The baroque town hall is a successor to the Renaissance town hall that was destroyed in the 30 Years' War.
The Pfalz Werla in the municipality of Schladen-Werla, south-east of Werlaburgdorf on a spur of land above the Oker river, is a UNESCO Global Geopark Harz. Braunschweiger Land. Ostfalen can also be discovered. The Palatinate of Werla flourished in the 10th century as an important base for the Ottonian rulers.
