After the closure of the Rammelsberg ore mine by PREUSSAG in the summer of 1988, a citizens' initiative prevented the mine from being demolished and enabled it to be reopened as a visitor mine. In 1992, the Rammelsberg ore mine was the first industrial site in Germany to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with the historic centre of Goslar.
You can enjoy the Rammelsberg World Heritage Site from "below" in two permanent guided tours and a special tour (adventure tour) in the underground mine rooms. Mine guides will inform you about the mining and historical context. Above ground, the permanent exhibition in the "Magazin" building provides a wide-ranging insight into the working and everyday life of the miners at Rammelsberg. You can experience the centrepiece of the above-ground buildings, the processing plant with its fascinating technology, which cascades up the slope of the Rammelsberg, on a guided tour.
On the open winding car of a restored inclined conveyor lift, you can climb 43 metres in height on a leisurely ride and see the impressive mine complex of the World Heritage Site from "above". Every year, large special exhibitions take up various themes from the historical surroundings of the former Rammelsberg ore mine and present them in a modern way.
