To the north of Bad Grund, directly on the Harz highway B 242, rises the 563 m high Iberg, a former coral reef from the Devonian period. There are numerous naturally formed caves in the Iberg, some of which were extended by mining activities in search of iron ore. The Iberg stalactite cave was discovered over 450 years ago by miners searching for ore deposits. The cave has been open to visitors since 1876 and is now one of the most visited sights in the Harz Mountains.
CaveExperienceCentre : Ancient secrets - presented in a modern way
A fascinating underworld and a great highlight of cave archaeology and DNA research can be discovered in the south-west Harz near Bad Grund: you will meet the famous dead from the Lichtenstein Cave - the oldest genetically documented extended family in the world to date - their Bronze Age cave grave and even their probable descendants today. Dive underground into an ancient coral reef from the South Seas and accompany it on its journey to the north. The Iberg stalactite cave is located in the former reef and present-day Iberg. With its special origins and as the realm of the dwarf king Hübich, it is exciting for all ages. Beautiful short and long-distance hiking trails also start from here.
The temperature underground is around 8 °C. If you can't manage the 17 % ascent and around 100 steps, you can "just" take a look around the extremely exciting museum. Take a break with a coffee or soup in the cafeteria and buy some nice souvenirs in the museum shop.
