Not far from the district town of Haldensleben lies a
Greywacke spur - embedded in a landscape park - Hundisburg Castle.
In the 16th century, the von Alvensleben family converted an original castle fortress here into a Renaissance palace. After its destruction in the Thirty Years' War, the castle and gardens were rebuilt and extended in the Baroque style of the time in 1693. After the decline of the von Alvensleben family, the Magdeburg industrialist J. G. Nathusius bought the castle. From 1831, it was mainly his son Hermann Engelhard von Nathusius, an important agronomist and zoologist of his time, who worked here and integrated the castle and garden into the larger Althaldensleben-Hundisburg landscape park. The baroque gardens were richly structured and decorated with ornaments and water features, complemented by exotic plants.
In 1945, the castle was occupied by Soviet soldiers. A fire destroyed the complex in November 1945.
In 1994, the castle, baroque garden and landscape park became the property of the town of Haldensleben and reconstruction work began in line with the preservation order. The 100-hectare park, laid out in the style of an English landscape park, is also included in this process. Hundisburg Castle is part of the "Saxony-Anhalt Garden Dreams" system; a nature and history trail leads through the park. The northern part of the castle houses the "House of the Forest" - the central information and experience centre on the subject of "forests" in Saxony-Anhalt. With a forest experience exhibition and
