Municipality of Lengede

The single municipality of Lengede was founded in 1972 and comprises the five villages of Barbecke, Broistedt, Klein Lafferde, Lengede and Woltwiesche with around 14,500 inhabitants.
Orchard meadows, natural playgrounds, childcare facilities in every village, three all-day primary schools as well as an IGS with an integrated sixth form and a medical centre can be found here, as well as retail, agriculture and medium-sized businesses. Lengede is a community with a future, where people enjoy living and working.
The history of the earth made it possible for the Lengede ore deposit to develop. The roots go back 86 million years, when the Lengede-Broistedt debris ore deposit was formed during the Upper Cretaceous in the Santonian. Ores transported from the sea accumulated in a natural sediment trough. The fossil finds accessible as a result of ore mining originate from the deep and deep sea.
open-cast mines. Numerous large ammonites were recovered from deep mining, while the majority
of the fossils come from the open-cast mines.

The fossils recovered during ore extraction are
preserved in different ways. The invertebrates are preserved in stone cores, while vertebrates have been documented by tooth finds and bones. Numerous specimens can be admired in a special exhibition in the town hall. All in all, Lengede has a rich fauna that documents life at the time of the Middle Santonian, around 86 million years ago. Three large ammonites are on display in the exhibition in the town hall. Ammonites are cephalopods that became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period and are of particular importance both for the Santonian strata of Lengede and as guide fossils.

The municipality of Cremlingen is located in the north of Germany's largest geopark - between the cities of Braunschweig and Wolfsburg - and the "Jurassic Sea Schandelah" geopoint is an exciting place for young and old archaeologists to discover. The open spaces of the "Herzogsberge" and "Wohld" nature reserves and the Elm, which is just a stone's throw away, invite you to take long walks and cycle tours. There is also plenty to experience in the ten villages in the municipality: in Abbenrode, for example, you can visit the mill ensemble with adjoining café and in Destedt the estate park, the first English landscape garden in Germany.
