Butterberg / Bad Harzburg

A special excursion tip for nature lovers is the natural history-geological geopath on butterberg. Between ancient beech trees, elms, ash trees, maple trees and rare plants such as Aronstab, Türkenbundlilie and Lerchensporn, you can enjoy wonderful views of the Harz and the Harz Foreland for one to two hours.

The strictly protected forest ecosystem, located parallel to Ilsenburger Straße, is a particularly idyllic recreation area and rich in historical significance. The Butterberg is a ridge on whose foot it was already about 10,000 years ago bc. People lived and hunted.

The hiking trail leads along the narrow ridge of the mountain, past rock formations and tree giants, and offers several views of the Harz foreland. The path is equipped with information boards on geology and flora as well as some resting benches.

The interesting history of the earth and the unique geological forms of the Harz and the Harz foreland led to the creation of the Geopark Harz-Braunschweiger Land-Ostfalen in 2002.

Length approx. 4 – 5 km, duration 1 to 2 hours
