The Samson silver mine is the only Upper Harz mine that has been preserved in its original state at its old location. With a complete waterwheel system and a wire-rope driving system from 1837, it is an internationally recognised mining monument and absolutely worth seeing. From 1521 to 1910, the "barrel-shaped" shaft, which followed the ore path, extracted silver-bearing ore from a depth of up to 810 metres. The Oderteich pond and the Rehberger Graben have supplied the mine with water for energy production almost without interruption for 300 years.
In Samson, you can admire the world's last "driving art" in working order. It is still used today by the operating staff of a mine power station, which generates electrical energy from the Oderteich water at depths of 130 metres and 190 metres. The neighbouring Catharina Neufang mine provides a deep insight into mining in times gone by.
The Samson Gaipel is also home to a canary museum. Breeding the "Harzer Roller" was an important sideline for the people of the Upper Harz mountains. Combine your visit to the Samson mine with a guided tour to the Oderteich and Rehberger Graben.
