What is a Geopark?

Ancient Sea and Tropical Swamp

450 million years of Earth’s history have left their mark between the Harz and the heath: sea cover alternated with deserts, tropical swamps and glaciers. Precious mineral resources are found to be ore, salt, coal and oil. Significant fossil finds testify to the eventful and exciting history of our region.

What is a Geopark?

A geopark is an area of great geological history with rocks, quarries and other geotopes of particular rarity and beauty. It also contains important archaeological, historical and cultural objects that are closely linked to natural resources.

… under one roof

A geopark serves sustainable regional development. Under its umbrella, existing facilities will be networked and joint activities will be developed in the field of geotope protection, leisure & tourism, as well as in environmental education and scientific research.
