Oil shale mining and the Schandelah-Wohld subcamp
From May 1944 to April 1945, oil shale was mined and carbonised into shale oil by concentration camp prisoners on the site of the memorial to the former Schandelah-Wohld subcamp. The guided tour explains the history of the subcamp as well as the geological and technical background to oil shale mining.
The tour has been included in the programme of the German UNESCO Commission's ESD Weeks 2021.
The meeting point is at the memorial stone at the former camp site, to the west
the entrance to the settlement of Schandelah-Wohld, north of the state road 633
between Hordorf and Scheppau. Duration: 1.5 hours.
