Der Wasserverband Weddel-Lehre (WWL) und Geopark laden 900 Grundschulkinder und ihre Lehrkräfte zum Umwelt-Projekt „Unser Wasser“ ein

16 primary schools from Braunschweig, Wolfsburg and the surrounding communities are taking part.

Where does our water come from? How is it cleaned after household use? What animals live in our local waters?
These are questions that the environmental project „OUR WATER“ gives an answer.
In May and June 2026, nearly 900 primary school children from Braunschweig and the surrounding area are invited to visit the WWL's largest wastewater treatment plant.

In the first part of the project day, the children learn interesting facts about the journey of water into households and back into our environment. Only very well purified water may be returned to nature's water cycle. In a tour of the large facility, the staff of the WWL demonstrate all the interesting purification processes.

Afterwards, the children go netting in the nearby Schunter. An activity that always causes great enthusiasm among the children and their teachers, as there are many different creatures to discover: such as dragonflies, caddisflies and mayflies, freshwater shrimp, water scorpions, fish and beetles. The lively diversity tells us that the water quality is to be rated as very good, and the children handle their finds with enthusiasm and great care, which are of course returned unharmed after identification and examination. The connection between wastewater treatment and environmental protection is vivid and lively for the children.

The OUR WATER project days raise awareness among children and teachers of sustainable water protection. The classes spend the whole morning at the sewage treatment plant and in the adjacent nature in the Schunter region.

The environmental project, in collaboration with the UNESCO Global Geopark Harz . Braunschweiger Land . Ostfalen and the maintenance association Schunter e. V., explains the complex processes of wastewater treatment in a child-friendly manner and supplements school curriculum content on the topic of water.

The project days OUR WATER have been taking place with primary schools in the WWL association area since 2014 and have been funded by the Lower Saxony BINGO Environmental Foundation since 2022. Edeka Bartsch from Lehre ensures a healthy break with a generous donation.

The primary schools in the following locations and communities in Brunswick, Wolfsburg, and the surrounding area are participating this year: Mascherode, Stöckheim, Waggum, Rautheim, Hondelage, Hattorf, Heiligendorf, Sickte, Schandelah, Destedt, Lehre, Süpplingen, Flechtorf, Volkmarode, Dettum, Weddel.

About the WWL
The employees of the municipal water association Weddel-Lehre, WWL for short, supply around 85,000 inhabitants with drinking water in the greater Braunschweig-Wolfsburg area. In addition, the WWL is responsible for collecting, treating, and discharging wastewater for 41,000 customers within its service area. The WWL is organised under public law and acts transparently, economically, and efficiently for its customers and member municipalities. Due to its municipal, democratic association structure, WWL customers are directly involved in the further development and direction of the WWL through their local representatives.
