Geopark takes part in the „Week of Nature“ 2026

As part of the nationwide „Week of Nature“, the Harz . Braunschweig Land . Ostfalen Geopark is offering several free events in June 2026 focusing on earth history, landscape, and fossils. The action week is organised by the Lower Saxony Bingo Environmental Foundation together with BINGO! – The Environmental Lottery and numerous organisers in Lower Saxony. The aim is to inspire people to experience nature and to bring children closer to nature in particular.
The opening event is the hike on Sunday, 21 June 2026, titled „Geological Point Jura Sea Schandelah: Landscape, Nature and Earth History“. From 2:35 PM to 5:30 PM, the excursion will lead from Schandelah train station to the Jura Sea Schandelah geological point. Together with the municipality of Cremlingen, the Dr. Scheller Foundation and the Natural History Museum Braunschweig, the Geopark invites you to discover the geological history of the region. The focus will be on the formation of the landscape and the development of flora and fauna. The guided tour will be led by Dr. Stefanie Bucher-Pekrun. The meeting point is Schandelah train station.
Also on Sunday, 21 June 2026, from 3.00 PM to 5.00 PM, the fossil excursion „Hexentaler and Sun Wheels“ will take place at the Evessen quarry. Under the expert guidance of Heike Meusel, a graduate geographer and certified geoguide, participants will set off with hammer and chisel in search of fossils and learn interesting facts about their origin and significance. The meeting point is the „Am Markmorgen“ car park in Evessen.
Another fossil hunt is on offer at the Geopark on Sunday, 28th June 2026, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Hainholz quarry. Here too, participants will join Heike Meusel in searching for traces of Earth's history and gain exciting insights into the landscape's development. The meeting point is the Lutterspring hiking car park near Königslutter am Elm.
All events are free of charge and funded by BINGO! Registration is open online from 29 May 2026 via Portal of the „Week of Nature“ Possible.
