“Protect what you love”

A BINGO-funded cooperation with all primary schools in the area covered by the Weddel-Lehre Water Association
Project period: 06 May – 12 June 2025
Where does our water come from? How is it cleaned and what animals live in our regional waters? These are questions to which the environmental project “OUR WATER” provides answers. In the months of May and June 2025, more than 700 children from Braunschweig and the surrounding area are invited to visit one of the sewage treatment plants of the Weddel-Lehre Water Association (WWL).
The environmental project in cooperation with the UNESCO Global Geopark Harz . Braunschweiger Land . Ostfalen and the Schunterverband e.V. teaches the complicated processes of wastewater treatment in a child-friendly way and complements teaching content on the subject of water. The children of the primary schools spend the whole morning at the sewage treatment plant and in the adjacent nature in the Schunter area.
In the first part of the project day, the children learn interesting facts about the path of water to households and back to our environment. Only very well-purified water may be returned to nature’s water cycle. The WWL employees show all the interesting cleaning processes during a guided tour of the large plant. Afterwards, the children are allowed to “net” themselves in the nearby Schunter. An activity that always inspires the children and their teachers, because there are many different creatures to discover: for example, various insect larvae, fish, water beetles and scorpions.
The aim of the project is to teach the children about the value of water and a functioning water supply and sanitation. The children are to be sensitized to issues of sustainable water protection. In the project, they acquire behaviours with which they can make their own contribution to the protection of water. The environmental education project is funded by the Lower Saxony BINGO Environmental Foundation. Edeka Bartsch from Lehre provides a healthy break with a generous donation.
The primary schools of the following towns and communities in Braunschweig, Wolfsburg and the surrounding area are participating: Lehre, Süpplingen, Flechtorf, Stöckheim, Volkmarode, Dettum, Weddel, Hattorf, Heiligendorf, Destedt, Waggum, Rautheim, Sickte, Schandelah, Hondelage.
The environmental project UNSER WASSER has been carried out since 2014 with the primary schools in the WWL association area.
