The chairman of the sponsoring association Hans Werner Schlichting and board member Detlef Kaatz welcomed the expansion of the Geopark partner network by SG Grasleben. Together they wanted to promote the Geopark and develop the infrastructure according to the UNESCO guidelines.
The mayor of the joint municipality of Grasleben, Gero Janze, emphasized that the local highlights of the municipality, such as the Mariental Monastery with its lapidarium, the Markgraf’scher Hof Salt Museum and the last active salt mine in the region, were to be jointly focused on and thus made better known. He sees the added value of the direct membership especially in the use of the Geopark network in the tourism sector.
The Mayor of Königslutter, Alexander Hoppe, emphasized that one can be proud to be part of one of only six UNESCO Global Geoparks in Germany and to be able to use this label for municipal work.
The Geopark Support Association is currently actively promoting the membership of the joint communities and unitary communities of the districts of the Geopark area in order to further improve the internal cooperation in Europe’s largest Geopark. Office manager Henning Zellmer used the occasion to present the plans for the establishment of a permanent municipal geopark committee. Through this committee, the municipalities shall be more directly involved in the geopark organisation in the future.
